offering

a fourteen-year-old finger
has written R.I.P.
on the dirt of the grave in our backyard—

now crisp
in frost
the dirt clods
turn up in ant-like hills

the air is sweet offering,
unseasoned firewood, fresh chopped cords,
some stacked, some piled, waiting—
for lifting by strong arms

—like i am, scattered
near this cross,
lining up my betrayals
before you—

where I remember
how far,

how far
you’ve carried me

Mukilteo (at Rose Hill)

At Rose Hill, you must
try rose water chocolate,
see Possession Sound
the color of storms.

At Rose Hill, you must
try lavender cheesecake,
see the white caps
cupping evergreen rain.

At Rose Hill, you must
try Bangalore spice,
see the lighthouse,
see the shore,
see the thunderbirds rich with lore.

At Rose Hill, you must
try yellow curry, coconut milk,
see Hat Island,
taste cinnamon dust.

At Rose Hill, you must.

Mukilteo is a city on the coast of Washington and a favorite of my family with its spectacular views, scrumptious chocolate, bold Northwest Coast art, fine restaurants, and delightful atmosphere.
