(About Poems)

Enter through the window,
not the door,
if you’re a poem.

Doors are so conspicuous.
You must be creative—

make me wonder
how you got here—

layered in metaphor,
side-smiled with simile

—surprise me,
even when just spoken plainly
from your heart.

As no doubt, even cerebral,
you are

Also, I’m delighted to have three poems in Lakdi Ka Pul – II, The Poetry Bridge, An International Anthology by Twin City Poetry Club.

How to Write a Poem

Author Tania Runyan surprised me by requesting to include a poem of mine in her book How to Write a Poem.  This work is a companion volume to How to Read a Poem.  Both books are recommended for those new to or seasoned in the art of writing or the enjoyment of reading poetry.  Click on the book image above (or on the sidebar) to read more about this work and to order your copy from Amazon.

Thank you Tania and T.S. Poetry!

Happy Thanksgiving to all celebrating!  Enjoy your holiday!

Wrestling with Goodbye

At all the wrong turns
and times, and for the wrong reasons,
we vowed love
through false teeth.

You were looking for a mother
I could never be, an anesthetic
for your terminal sicknesses.
And I was hiding who I was meant to be,
afraid of myself.

I am sorry for the mask
and how long it wore me.
Still, I am not sure if you are as fatally sorry
for this headstone you’ve saddled me with.

No matter—
a dew dropped, more dark than red, rose
waits on the doorstep.
Take it,
I can live with your ghost no longer.

Plus, I’m learning what it’s like to be me
without you
and how,
to like her.
