Butterfly, Rest

We captured blown kisses
left like a note
on the kitchen table
saying,

I’ll be back soon--
just went to the grocery
to pick up a few things.

If we only knew
then,

that last sprinkling,
last dot under the heart
she drew

on the page
was her final
wingspread

now folded.

sometimes when I leave a note I think' what if this was my last words to them'! this poem is delicate as a butterfly's wing!

As Ali said, this "floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee." The details here, so gentle and so well observed, culminate in a profound, sad lick to the stomach. This reminded me of the last time I saw my father alive in 1999. Thanks, Mosk

Imagine some loved one opening a door and just flying away on butterfly wings. There is such a hush in these lines. Beautiful.

Really is profound. I ran out the door the other day (late to a hair appointment) and didn't take time to kiss my husband goodbye - and I remember thinking - he always kisses ME goodbye. And it DID flit through my head "what if..."
