Two years
was not long enough
to know your light.
You gave me
your handwritten recipe
for orange marmalade;
your daughters gave me
your cookbook holder,
serving bowl,
a vessel of sun
from your backyard—
and spaces to hold
the reminder
of your smile.
My sweet neighbor, Sarah, passed away on August 31st. Her husband, John, passed away on September 2nd, but that is another poem.
This is a sweet and moving tribute to your neighbor Sarah. Love the detailed gifts and memories.
ReplyDelete"to hold the reminder of your smile" is a really nice ending.
ReplyDeleteOh, man. Those last lines are perfection. I lost a friend last month, so I felt this deeply. I'm so sorry for your loss, and thankful you have memories and places to hold her light.

I love the vessel of sun - a lovely way to remember a friend. Truedessa
ReplyDeleteLovely poem.
ReplyDeleteA poignant tribute to your neighbour, Jennifer, and what a lovely way to remember her through cookery and marmalade. I especially love the phrase: ‘a vessel of sun from your backyard’.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wonder what I do without my bestie, and I can't imagine. My heart goes out to you and her family. When dear people depart, they take something of us with them, don't they, but they also leave some of their richness with us as well.
ReplyDeleteOops. What I WOULD do. She is very much alive and kicking!
DeleteI know you will have to remember her eating that marmelade.. a lovely reminder.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, what a beautiful tribute to your neighbour!
ReplyDeleteI would die for such loving words... literally.
So poignant, and beautiful tribute. 💙
ReplyDelete"and spaces to hold

Such a wonderful tribute. Not long enough yet you'll remember for the rest of your life. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful ode to Sarah. May she rest in peace. Thank you for sharing your memory of her with us.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, so much said in so few words. My condolences on the passing of a lovely neighbor (and her husband, just a few days later.)
ReplyDeletea fine remembrance ~
