Sarah

Two years

was not long enough

to know your light.

You gave me

your handwritten recipe

for orange marmalade;

your daughters gave me

your cookbook holder,

serving bowl,

a vessel of sun

from your backyard—

and spaces to hold

the reminder

of your smile.

My sweet neighbor, Sarah, passed away on August 31st.  Her husband, John, passed away on September 2nd, but that is another poem.

  3. Oh, man. Those last lines are perfection. I lost a friend last month, so I felt this deeply. I'm so sorry for your loss, and thankful you have memories and places to hold her light.

  5. A poignant tribute to your neighbour, Jennifer, and what a lovely way to remember her through cookery and marmalade. I especially love the phrase: ‘a vessel of sun from your backyard’.

  6. Sometimes I wonder what I do without my bestie, and I can't imagine. My heart goes out to you and her family. When dear people depart, they take something of us with them, don't they, but they also leave some of their richness with us as well.
