Chair with the Wings of a Vulture, 1960, Salvador Dali

from broken life
to broken life
the deadlight
arises
vulturous

lit candles warming
the addicts’ spoons,
lift plumes
like blackbirds’ wings,
ominous,

cancerous
moments that free them
to carrion,
eyes nightblind
to hope threaded
in a spindle spoke sky

  3. This is so moving, Jennifer – visceral and yet, penned with depth and artistry.

“hope threaded in a spindle spoke sky” – an inspired expression of the cycle of drug abuse: twisting and winding and revolving over and over and over.

  7. A powerful and dreary image. The sense of hopelessness is too keen. It is incredible to understand what the addicts consciously choose and why they do so. Great poem. :)
