Saturday Morning Cartoons (with Oreos and Milk)

A father wakes up
before everybody else

and sets the world whistling.

Except on Saturday,
when he's supposed to get to sleep in,
but you jump on his belly
and pry his eyes open
to watch cartoons with you.

He doesn't mind, though,
because you're his.

For my daddy.

Dad, remember Oreos and milk for breakfast with Saturday morning cartoons? I do. Good times. :)

Ha.. we only had morning cartoons during Christmas vacations when I grew up... and we watched them without dad.. But this sounds like wonderful memories.

What warm and precious memories! I do not remember morning cartoons and my dad was not a great fan of children's programs but I share similar memories with my mother.

Brought back some of my childhood memories. Nice one. Happy 2015.

"Sets the world whistling'--such a fine and true reversal--when on Saturday it is the child who does this. I like the first person narrative, and even, maybe the suggestion that the "I" doesn't know how important her Saturday action is.

The best time, I love how you painted with him with this line: sets the world whistling.

Happy New Year Jennifer ~

I love your writing style....it feels so effortless...you capture scenes in such a relatable way that even though I didn't even have a tv growing up, I feel a sense of nostalgia reading this. That's talent!!

Cheers!

This made me smile - my dad would roll the tiny black & white tv into my room, get doughnuts and juice for me and my brothers, would watch a few cartoons with us then leaving my mom to sleep, would head out to play golf! Thank you for reminding me of this wonderful time!

Yes, they do this to us all the time.

Lovely capture, Jennifer. A Saturday morning (for young, and not so young) is an entity of time unto itself, isn't is . . . that comfortable, relaxed "hanging out" with a loved one: so special.

Yum, Oreos and milk; wish I could still have that.
Nice work. I especially like

A father wakes up
before everybody else

and sets the world whistling.
