ordinary summer nights

we’ve been
thirsting for this all year—

summer,
when we cut the edges off
with soft flecks
of twilight
that stream
the warm air,
bespeckled with

sprinkler water

of bare toes
that splash and dash

for watermelon,
for staying up late

for each other,

to share
the extra-
ordinary
sparkle with

Lovely vignette of Summer, redolent with its sights and sounds. I love the last few lines where everything is made special through the agency of a companion.

Oh I love this! Summer has a way of casting one's mind back to those childhood days - and your images have done that perfectly here, Jennifer.

Sounds like so much fun... and isn't it nice we are free to celebrate like this with our kids?

hmm...my bare toes do quite enjoy this time if year.

I wouldn't mind a couple of late nights with watermelon dripping down my chin and s'mores dancing on my tastebuds.

I miss the days of children in the sprinklers. Your poem took me there.

I wish summer still held the wonder it did when I was a child.

Summer... We all certainly thirst for it throughout the whole year. I personally spend my life desperately waiting for summer to come and wishing it was never over. A very nice take on the prompt and a very touching way to put it down, Jennifer!

This really sparkled for me. Lovely poem. I thought I had commented days earlier but the Internet seems to have chewed up several of my comments the past week. Anyway, thanks for sharing this lovely piece with us, and I like how the sprinkled water goes dripping. Fabulous. :0)
