we’ve been
thirsting for this
all year—
summer,
when we cut the edges
off
with soft flecks
of twilight
that stream
the warm air,
bespeckled with
sprinkler water

Lovely. I remember those summer evenings, when we briefly lived up north...
This is very touching, Jennifer. I really love remembering those sprinkler times. I like the idea of staying up late and sharing the sparkle. Summers are for making memories!
I enjoyed you poem, Jennifer, the uplifting tone, the lovely details (like watermelon) and the layout.
Dropping to the carefree kiss...I love the imagery and the memories that you bring out with this poem - thank you!
Ah! a delightful piece: playful carefree and refreshing like sparkling water
Thank you for dropping in at my blog
Much love...
Lovely vignette of Summer, redolent with its sights and sounds. I love the last few lines where everything is made special through the agency of a companion.
Oh I love this! Summer has a way of casting one's mind back to those childhood days - and your images have done that perfectly here, Jennifer.
Sounds like so much fun... and isn't it nice we are free to celebrate like this with our kids?
What a lovely carefree summer canvas ~ Sweet as ripe watermelons, smiles ~
hmm...my bare toes do quite enjoy this time if year.
I wouldn't mind a couple of late nights with watermelon dripping down my chin and s'mores dancing on my tastebuds.
now that's a delightful sketch of summer and those special moments...
Jennifer, you always amaze me with the words you choose and images you create. Love that second stanza! And what wonderful sprinkler memories you bring :-)
A delightful write Jennifer. You have captured the wonderful times of summer here. I love it!
That wonderful summer feeling that refreshing drenching, this sings of life.

I miss the days of children in the sprinklers. Your poem took me there.
I wish summer still held the wonder it did when I was a child.
Well said.
very warm moments of summer..loved it:)
Summer... We all certainly thirst for it throughout the whole year. I personally spend my life desperately waiting for summer to come and wishing it was never over. A very nice take on the prompt and a very touching way to put it down, Jennifer!
summertime, when the livin's easy... but the poetry is hard (for me, of late). glad you can write so well :) ~
This really sparkled for me. Lovely poem. I thought I had commented days earlier but the Internet seems to have chewed up several of my comments the past week. Anyway, thanks for sharing this lovely piece with us, and I like how the sprinkled water goes dripping. Fabulous. :0)
