semper augustus

like
a garnet-streaked tulip, valentine,

in a field of daffodils
more yellow
than the newborn springtime sun

more welcome
than my favorite denim, softest sweater,
my cowgirl boots

and, seeming
            lost
like lace and pearls
by the bed, on the floor
come morning

is found,
rare
           and flaming,

between us

a little bit of a late valentine...smiles. for ian.

the semper augustus was the most rare and valuable tulip at the height of tulipomania in the 17th century ($5,700 for a single bulb!).

I love that incredible way you tie the opening and closing together...

This is so carefully executed going through the general imagery to the close and intimacy -- such rare perfection in that tulip that we always dream of in a relationship

a sweet and tender poem of love and tulips, both rare and valuable - smiles

Love this piece - so sensual and romantic. Flowers, by virtue of their delicate and, somewhat ephemeral nature, really evoke that sense of fragility and magic that is inherent in a beautiful, tender and amorous coming together - and your choice of such a rare bloom, is inspired.
