The Wedding Gift

The chime is engraved
with a lighthouse,
a harbor,
a ship on the sea.

It hangs from the eaves
above our deck

and has, for nearly
seventeen years,
sprinkled its tune
at every house
we've called home.

It fell
            once,
in a major storm,

was never broken, but
lay serenely
at our feet
waiting--

ready to give light, melody.

And though
I tire of wind,
of storms,
it's taught me to listen,
             hope,
                       trust light
and
play on.

Wow, Jennifer - I love your windchimes! Nice that it has been with you thru so many moves and years. And what a perfect vehicle for the prompt. Thank you for your kind words, they mean so much - K

congratulations on your 17 years wishing you many more. This had the feel of quiet confident strength - and I've always loved wind-chimes.

oh wow - what a beautiful wedding gift and how it went with you wherever you went and that it didn't break in the storm... everything me thinks that teaches us to listen is a good thing...smiles

Oh I love this.. a windchime like that would play forever it seems.. I like how it was saved after the storm.. and I hope that it is the same with your marriage.. our windchime has definitely not been in the house that long...

Oh my, this is beautiful--and I must echo Bjorn's comment as well, lasting chimes.

Lovely! There is nothing quite like the delicate - almost mystical - tinkling of chimes. How wonderful, to have the warm familiarity of a cherish sound scattered through the years of your life. Wherever you go, the family homes you have lived in (and the memories) will be held in those notes.

though we don't like the storm in the moment,
it does teach us...for the next one....I like how you start on the chimes
and build from there...I love listening to their tinkling...I like too how you
tie it through that to the wedding...

I like the strength in this - fragile but so strong even a storm cannot break it. Blessings on your 17 years and may you always have music in your lives. Hayes Spencer is Kanzensakura

You made me realize how fortunate I am, having not just my own wind-chime but the neighbors' as well. They make a very melodic corner of the world and indeed a perfect wedding gift.
Congrats :-)
