Fields of Remembrance

Cut corn stalks in the wind” video by Maria Wulf at Full Moon Fiber Art

The howling of the wolves,
the empty stalks,
this is home now.

Remember when we had it all,
before the burning, the chafing,
the emptying?

I won't cry, though;

tonight, a full moon
reveals the sickle-swept rows
we hid between,

and our ghosts laughing
and playing,

reflecting us
as we always should have been.

Powerful - yet tender and wistful ... as looking back, often is. An eloquent piece of writing, Jennifer.

A poem which taps deeply into memory, speaks hauntingly of the past and makes us reconsider our present - a very fine piece of writing.

I found this so haunting... especially how you wrap it up in that last line. In a way it's soothing as well, to have the memories is better than being without.

Here today and gone tomorrow? There is some sadness in those used up cornfields.
But others will come to pick up the pieces. The pheasants and other gleaners have a hay day. Pun intended.

"I won't cry, though"... Memories are often so wonderful and then... we have to step out and leave them behind. Very hard to do with the ones we hold dear... but they do nourish us for a lifetime. Beautifully done!

I can't say enough about this poem. It's haunting - mournful and yet filled with hope. I want to keep reading it over and over.

Beautiful...I love this portion:

"I won't cry, though;

tonight, a full moon
reveals the sickle-swept rows
we hid between,"
