Crisscross

Our kitchen became hers when

she moved in with us

after Grandpa died.

She taught me classic

peanut butter cookies—

how to crisscross the tops with sugared fork.

I watched knee-side as she made

cream pies, one after the other,

laying a blanket of raw pie crust in a tin,

poked with fork, baked, let cool,

and scooped full with mounds of creamy goodness

in rich dollops filling up the shell.

She shaved chocolate,

sprinkled toasted coconut,

layered thick meringue.

I wish I could look

into that kitchen window,

peering in from the backyard,

and see her strong capable hands,

her quick movements,

my eyes wide and hopeful,

youthful innocence and joy

sticking to my fingers

like sugar and cream.

Oh, for a quick taste

of memory—

like the window to a long-forgotten dream.

john

he always had a smile for me

whenever I asked him

how he was—

he’d say, i’m alright, it’s the world

that’s all wrong

with that teasing glint in his eye

you’re right, john, sure—

but it was a little right, too—

knowing you

Ghostpane Tableau

photo © jennifer wagner

Handprints, a nose print,

on the frost-filled pane.

A ghost? Of Christmas

past? A loved-one there

looking in at hearth

ablaze and home sweet

home.  Golden light on

tinseled tree.  Bows in

red and green.  Gifts of

winter mirth and love’s

soft-mittened hand in

savored memories.

Loon Lake

The three of us,

with the late afternoon sun

in our hair,

semi-stuck in the reeds,

using paddles to try to turn

that little pedal boat around,

our laughter

catching the ears of teen boys

who came to give us a push—

where did we each end up—

different places,

but still,

the three of us,

nudged by

wind, water, sun,

have memory

of the last golden glint

of rowing together

in a coming-of-age summer,

and the haunting song

of loons on the lake

here and gone.
